Carpet Re-cycling UK (CRUK)

Most of you will know Cormar are big supporters of Carpet Re-cycling UK (CRUC).

This is an organisation that was set up in 2008, with the intention of diverting over 709,000 tonnes of carpet waste created every year (the equivalent to 43,846 football pitches) - from landfill to recycling or energy recovery.

Back in 2007, only 2% of carpet waste created was re-cycled. In 2016 that figure had increased to 35% and last year the diversion rate was 42%. The goal for CRUC is to achieve 60% by 2020.

The manufacturers and distributers that support CRUK also continued to grow last year, while retailers and flooring contractor members have also increased, as more flooring companies recognise the cost savings and sustainability impact on their businesses.

Awareness and interest in recycling carpet waste continues to grow, with a 28% increase in enquiries over the phone, online and at events. In addition, an increasing social media presence has enhanced their visibility.

All in all, an encouraging picture for the industry and this clearly shows that the focus directed by CRUK and its’ associate members, is having a positive effect.
